Morningside Heights – 2915 Broadway at 114th Street
This neighborhood bookshop has a delightful children’s room located on the lower level  featuring a kid-size table and chairs, a wooden tea set, a dollhouse and other playthings.

Flatiron – 18 West 18th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues
NYC’s largest and oldest children’s bookstore–this is the type of place that enchants and inspires young readers. The place is organized in a way to maximize your browsing experience. And if you get hungry, you can enjoy a tasty treat from Birdbath.

La Casa Azul Bookstore

East Harlem – 143 East 103rd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues
La Casa Azul  celebrates Latino culture with countless titles from Latino authors, as well as many classic and mainstream books for readers of all ages. You can find children’s books by Latino authors, mainstream classics like Goodnight Moon in both English and Spanish, and popular character books (Hola Dora!).

McNally Jackson Books

Soho – 52 Prince Street between Lafayette and Mulberry Streets
This spacious two-story bookstore boasts a children’s nook stocked with famous classics and lesser-known indie titles as well as a cafe full of kid-friendly snacks.
Events: Baby story time on Fridays at 4:00 pm ages 0-2, a themed story time with storytelling and original art projects Saturdays at 11:30 am ages 3-10, and Spanish story time Thursdays at 4:30 pm ages 2-6. Plus there are monthly puppet shows! Event Calendar

Posman Books

Grand Central Terminal, Chelsea Market, and Rockefeller – 9 Grand Central Terminal,  75 9th Avenue 30 Rockefeller Plaza
A family-owned independent mini-chain, Possman has been around for more than twenty years. The kids book collection is strong in NYC-centric books, and they also offer a nice selection of toys, cards and stationary.


Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab

Park Slope – 458 Bergen St.
This cozy little store focuses on children’s books for babies through young adults. It also offers a wide range of programming for kids after school, on weekends, and over the summer.
Events: Free storytimes on Sundays at 10:30 am. They also host storytimes with staff on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:30 am for a per family fee (see the Storytelling Lab page for details)

powerHouse on 8th

Park Slope – 1111 Eighth Avenue between 11th and 12th Street
A recent offshoot of the well-loved powerHouse Arena in Dumbo, this bookstore has an excellent children’s book section and hosts all their kids events.
Events: Story time on Sunday mornings at 11:30 am, often starring local kid-lit authors reading their own work. The shop also hosts a monthly book club for tweens and young teens, moderated by kids’ book blogger Jordan B. Nielsen of Event Page

Greenlight Bookstore

Fort Greene – 686 Fulton Street at South Portland Avenue
A neighborhood staple with a solid collection of children’s books as well as some toys.
Events: Story time for on Saturdays at 11am for 3-8 year olds; Sundays at 11 am for babies and toddlers. The store also hosts a Young Readers Book Group on the fourth Tuesday of every month where pizza is served and readers engage in a guided discussion about a pre-selected title (parents can drop-off). The Community Bookstore

Park Slope – 143 Seventh Avenue between Garfield Place and Carroll Street
This charming Brooklyn mainstay offers a kid’s area with comfy seats, as well as a friendly dog and cat.

Greenpoint – 126 Franklin Street between Banker St and Cayler St
A homey bookstore that offers a mail order book gift subscription for kids for either six or twelve months.
